For over a decade, long weaves have characterized the appearance of the Black model on Victoria Secret’s prestigious runway. This year, however, 23-year-old Angolan model Maria Borges bucks the trend by walking with her own natural hair in the show.
“I told my agent I wanted to walk in the Victoria’s Secret show with my natural hair,” said Borges in a social media response to an entertainment reporter’s acknowledgment of her stance. “I was nervous, but I had to do it. When they said ‘yes’ I didn’t expect it, but I was so happy!”
Ladybrille models, it is good to see diversity on the runway. Also, don’t be afraid to speak up, and even if you are afraid, still speak up. I know often as a model, you may feel like you shouldn’t speak up because you don’t want to be perceived as a “troublemaker.” But the reality is speaking up can make a huge difference for you and sometimes millions worldwide. It can also make our modeling industry stronger by creating a better working environment and conditions for models.
Congratulations to Maria and congratulations to Victoria Secret for saying “yes” and effectively expanding its market reach.
The Victoria Secret show was taped this past Tuesday at New York City’s Lexington Avenue Armory in front of an audience full of models, celebrities and other high profile attendees.
